Freak Flag Productions
Shop Julian's DesignsI am a Vermonter and child of an art teacher, so I pretty much had art implements put in my hand within moments of birth.
I create my artwork via an uninhibited stream of consciousness. My creative process allows me to make my inner sparkle outwardly apparent and encourage others to do the same. Every time I begin a project, I have my heyday with sequins, beads, and flashy fabrics, creating effervescent clothing or applying those elements to morph the ordinary, forgotten, and unappealing (e.g. single shoes, broken sunglasses, defunct coffee bean grinders) into something bizarre, new, and eye-catching. I also pull out an eclectic array of multicultural beads, bits, pieces, and found objects when assembling jewelry to invite the wearer to enjoy the riches of upcycling and consider the impact of wasteful commercial overconsumption.
Inspiration for my "bedazzled" work originally comes from the artist Helene Bess as well as the accouterments for the West African Yoruba and Vodou religions. I am also inspired by artists Nick Cave and Jeffrey Gibson, Black Masking/Mardi Gras Indians in New Orleans, and clothing embellishments and trim from India.
