Don't Fence Me In!
“In our last summer together, my wife and I rented a lovely old house on The Cape, and the backyard was fenced in by a sturdy new fence to keep back the encroaching forest behind. Later in one of my visits to the memory unit, she asked to "come home" because she felt confined there - and she WAS. I came home, white painted over what I had begun, and painted an ancient but wide-open fence, because we were both "fenced in" by Alzheimer's.”
